Conway, Ark. - Conway, Ark. - UT Arlington used a smothering defense and a balanced offensive attack to earn an easy 71-47 victory over Central Arkansas Saturday.
The UT Arlington (15-10, 7-5 Southland Conference) defense smothered the Bears all afternoon as they held UCA to just 23.3 from the field. That mark and Central Arkansas' 47 points were season-lows for an UTA opponent as the Mavericks won for the seventh time in the last eight games.
For the third time in the last four games, the Mavericks jumped out a large halftime lead and went on to an easy victory. UT Arlington opened the game up midway through the first half as they held the Bears without a point for almost seven minutes.
The Mavericks went on a 12-0 run during that span and finished the half with a 32-21 advantage. A 13-2 second half run helped put the game out of reach. The 24-point victory was also the largest of the season for UT Arlington.
Central Arkansas (8-18, 2-10 Southland Conference) started the second half making just one of its first 18 field goal attempts. The Bears made just 7-of-30 field goals in each half.
UTA finished the game shooting 50.9 and won the rebounding battle by a 44-34 margin. The Mavericks are now 15-1 when scoring at least 70 points.
Marquez Haynes, the third-leading scoring in the nation, led the Mavericks with 19 points. Tommy Moffitt added 14 points and a team-high 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season and the sixth of his career. Armani Williams added 12 points as ten of the 11 Mavericks scored in the game.
Tadre Sheppard led Central Arkansas with 10 points and the Mavericks held the Bears' leading scorer Mitch Rueter to just six points.
