Arlington, Texas - Fresh off their first tournament of the spring season, the UT Arlington golf team will tee it up again this Monday and Tuesday Feb. 22 and 23 at the JL Lewis Intercollegiate in New Braunfels, Texas.
The Mavericks finished 8th in a field of 14 teams last week at the Battle of the Beach. That tournament featured a field of some of the top teams in collegiate golf. For their efforts, UTA moved up to 54th in the nation.
"We need to us these tournaments to start positioning ourselves to getting into the NCAA Tournament," UTA head coach Jay Rees said. "We have played well over the last few years in these tournaments and we need to continue that trend as we begin to get closer to the conference tournament and beyond."
Rees will use the lineup of Zack Fischer, Bobby Massa, Donald Dowie, Wes Worster and Hunter Brown this week to help improve their national ranking. Trey Herring will play as an individual.
Worster led the Mavericks last week with a tie for 15th in a difficult field while Fischer was in a tie for 22nd.
"Wes played well last week and his game is really starting to come around," Rees said. "I look for him to continue his improved play this week."
After playing a "play six, count five" format last week, this tournament will be contested over the normal scoring rules where the top four scores of the day count and each player will play with two player from other teams. Last week the team played as two-somes with other schools.
The Bandit Golf Club will played to 6,928 yards and a par of 72. The 54-hole tournament features 36 holes Monday with an 8 a.m. shotgun start and the final 18 holes Tuesday with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
There are 11 teams in the tournament. Besides the host Texas State and UTA other schools include Rice, Central Arkansas, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, North Texas, Houston, UTSA, Oral Roberts and Houston Baptist.
