Huntsville, Texas - Huntsville, Texas - Sam Houston State used a combination of deadly outside shooting and tight defense to defeat UT Arlington easily 94-69 Saturday night.
The Bearkats (21-6, 13-1 Southland) took control early in the game and led by a 51-28 mark at halftime. They made 10-of-21 3-points in the first half alone and finished the half shooting 51.4%.
More of the same happened in the second half, as the Bearkats continued to hit 3-pointers as they built their lead to as many as 30. Sam Houston finished the game shooting 14-of-34 from 3-point range and 48.5% from the field. UTA finished the game shooting 43%
Sam Houston helped build their big halftime lead by taking advantage of UT Arlington (16-11, 8-6 Southland) turnovers. The Bearkats turned 13 UTA miscues into 29 points in the first half alone
"We had way too many turnovers tonight and it really cost us," UTA head coach Scott Cross said. "They took advantage of every one of those it seemed. But we were outplayed in every facet of this game."
UT Arlington went extended periods of time in the first half without scoring. There were spans of three and five minutes without a point as the Bearkats lead continued to grow.
Corey Allmond and Gilberto Clavell led four Sam Houston players in double figures with 21 points each. Preston Brown had 15 while Ashton Mitchell added 11.
Marquez Haynes, LaMarcus Reed and Brandon Long each scored 14 points to lead the Mavericks lost for just the second time in their last 10 games.
