SAN ANTONIO, Tex. - UT Arlington showed last weekend that it can overcome the mistakes that plagued the Mavericks at times earlier this season.
Thursday night at UTSA, those errors came back to bite the Mavs in their Southland Conference opener.
Amanda Aguilera paced UTA with 13 kills, but numerous mistakes allowed the Roadrunners to come away with a 3-1 victory.
The Mavs committed 24 attack errors and 12 service errors, derailing their chance to win away from home for the first time this season. The mistakes especially cost UTA in the first set, when it lost five points on service errors and lost the set by three points.
"The service errors, again, are probably the worst stats I see because we tried to work so hard on it the last two weeks and thought maybe we'd turned the corner on it, but obviously not," UTA coach Diane Seymour said. "The first game really set the tone for the whole night."
Whitney Walls posted 13 kills to lead UTSA to its 25-22, 14-25, 25-17, 25-18 win.
Alicia Shaffer led the Mavs' defensive effort with 25 digs. Kendall Whitson added a career-high 14 digs. Aguilera also had eight digs and Raegan Daniel finished with nine.
"Very pleased with Kendall's night especially," Seymour said. "She played extremely well and I thought Alicia did, too."
Seymour said the passing was very good all night, making the difficulties on the attack more frustrating.
While UTA had a strong night with digs, its blocking - normally one of its most reliable traits - never got on track Thursday. UT Arlington leads the conference in blocks, but managed just six against the Roadrunners (7-8, 1-0).
Bianca Sauls finished the night with 12 kills and seven digs.
Daniel dished out 37 assists in defeat.
Christy Driscoll enjoyed a good night, earning eight kills against just one error.
Now Seymour hopes her team can find a way to play the way it has this year at home.
"There's not a lot the coaches can do right now," Seymour said. "We've got to get back to serving balls in. All we can do is go down to Corpus Christi tomorrow, get on the court, practice on their court and try to find the intensity back that we had this weekend."
The match marked the third consecutive home win for UTSA in the series.
The Mavs (6-9, 0-1) return to action when they play Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on the road Saturday at 1 p.m.
