ARLINGTON, Tex. - Alicia Shaffer was named as an honorable mention for Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon.

The junior libero compiled 77 digs in 14 matches over the weekend. Her defensive effort helped UT Arlington win three of four matches in the UT Arlington Maverick Classic - against UALR, Louisiana Tech and UT Pan American.

The Magnolia native racked up 22 kills against UT Pan American, leading a defensive unit that held the Broncos to a -.008 attack percentage. It marked the first time since the season opener in 2005 that the Mavericks held an opponent to a negative hitting percentage.

Emily Shearin was also recognized by the league, being named an honorable mention for Offensive Player of the Week.

Shearin's performance, which featured 34 kills and 18 blocks over the four matches, earned her a spot on the UT Arlington Maverick Classic all-tournament team.

The Mavs play again Thursday at 2:30 p.m. when they play Northern Colorado in the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic in Laramie, Wyo.
