A late rally fell short for UT Arlington as they fell 76-72 to Lamar Saturday night.
The Mavericks (7-9, 1-2 Southland Conference) trailed by as many as 18 points in the second half and were down 61-48 with 3:59 to play before the rally began.
Lamar's (8-8, 2-1Anthony Miles committed an intentional foul with 1:13 to play giving the Mavs one last chance as they trailed by 10. Bo Ingram converted one of two free throws and that was followed by a LaMarcus Reed layup to cut the lead to seven.
Lamar's Devon Lamb then made a layup and Reed answered that with a 3-pointer to bring the Mavericks to six with 55.4 seconds to play.
Mike James made two free throws that were answered by a Bradley Gay 3-pointer and the Mavs were down by five at 72-67. After another UTA foul, Miles made just one of his two free throws and Reed made another layup for a four-point deficit.
After the teams traded free throws, Miles made two free throws to seal the game for the Cardinals. A layup at the buzzer accounted for the final score.
"We played well in the second half but the first half was disappointing," UTA head coach Scott Cross said. "We didn't have the same intensity in the first 20 minutes as we did in the second half. We have to figure out how to do that every minute of every game and fight for 40 minutes."
Kendrick Harris led four Lamar (8-8, 2-1 Southland) players in double figures with 17. Miles and Brandon Davis each had 16 while Lamb added 13 and a team-high 12 rebounds.
Five UTA players scored in double figures with Reed leading the way with 15. Gay added 14. Brandon Edwards had seven rebounds to lead the way for UTA.
The Mavericks dug a big hole in the first half as they shot 24.2% and trailed 33-18. They trailed by as many as 18 in the second half and never less than 10 until the final minute of the game.
"We missed some shots early and sometimes with a young team that can create some problems which it did tonight," Cross said.
UT Arlington finished the game shooting 35.2% while Lamar, the third-leading scoring team in the nation, shot 41.5%. Lamar outrebounded the Mavs 48-36 to overcome 26 turnovers. The Cardinals also had a decided advantage in free throws as they made 24 and the Mavericks had only 15.
