Final Stats
BEAUMONT, Tex. - The UT Arlington women's basketball team dropped a 62-56 decision on the road to Lamar Saturday at the Montagne Center. UTA fell to 4-11 overall and 1-2 in league action.
Despite playing without guard Jenna Plumley, Lamar was able to capitalize on 25 turnovers and a 22.6 second half shooting performance by the Mavs.
UT Arlington opened with their third different lineup in the last three games. Freshman Malaika Green made her first start of the season at point. Green tied the game at 6-6 with a pair of 3-pointers. Shalyn Martin joined in on the 3-point frenzy draining her first at the 11:42 mark, giving the Mavs a 14-9 advantage.
A layup by Taylor Hays with 4:36 remaining in the half made it a one-point game (23-22). Martin brought the Mavs up 30-24 at the 2:04 mark by scoring seven straight points.
UTA was able to capitalize on the Lady Cardinal's miscues and low shooting percentage to end the half with a 37-30 lead.
The Mavericks finished the half shooting 41.4 percent to the Lady Cardinals 27.3 percent from the field.
UT Arlington struggled to find their offense as they were held scoreless until the 15:13 mark when Martin sank a pair of free throws to make it 39-24.
A 3-pointer from Monique Whittaker sparked a 9-2 run that tied the game at 43-43 with 11:16 remaining. Whittaker would strike again with a three that gave the Lady Cardinals their first lead (47-45) of the game since the 15:57 mark of the first half.
The Mavericks were within one at 48-49 at the 8:28 mark but the Mavericks would continue to play catch up the rest of the way.
Martin led the Mavs with 21 points on 8-of-22 from the field, 1-of-6 from 3-point range and 4-of-4 from the free throw line. The double-digit performance was the fourth straight for the senior.
Green added a season-high 11 points while Jasmine Smith grabbed a season-high 11 rebounds.
The Mavs out-rebounded Lamar by a 48-43 margin but the Lady Cardinals recorded 20 point off of the Mavericks turnovers.
UTA finished the game shooting 31.7 percent (19-of-60) from the field, 25 percent (5-of-20) from 3-point range and 72.2 percent (13-of-18) from the free throw line.
UT Arlington will remain on the road when they travel to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday, January 19 at 7 p.m.
