Final Stats
Corpus Christi, Texas - Tamara Simmons's 18 second half points led the UT Arlington women's basketball team past Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 66-63 Wednesday night. The win improved the Mavericks to 5-11 overall and 2-2 in conference action.
Simmons finished the game with 18 points on 6-of-17 shooting from the field, 3-of-5 from behind the arc and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. Simmons scored all 18 points in the second half.
With 3:03 remaining in the game, the Mavericks leading scorer connected on a huge 3-pointer to put the Mavs within one at 58-57. Simmons then made a steal, was fouled and sent to the free throw line where she knocked down both freebies, putting the Mavericks on top by one.
A&M-Corpus Christi regained a two point advantage but a pair of free throws by Jasmine Smith tied the game at 61-61 with 1:27 left to play. The Islanders retook the lead following a Jessica Jammer layup but it was all Simmons in the final seconds of the game.
The Arlington native knocked down another clutch 3-pointer with 33 seconds, which gave the Mavs a 64-63 advantage. With 20 seconds remaining, the Islanders turned the ball over in their next possession when Jammer stepped out of bounce.
Simmons and Martin connected on their free throws in the final seconds to close out the game.
UTA finished the game shooting 40.4 percent from the field (23-of-57) to the Islanders 33.9 percent (21-of-62).
Martin also finished with 18 points, six rebounds, four assists and four blocks. Smith recorded nine points and six rebounds in 27 minutes of action.
Adrienne Scott led the Islanders with 16 points and 16 rebounds while Jammer recorded 10.
The Mavericks return to the friendly confines of Texas Hall for a 2 p.m. match up against Stephen F. Austin on Saturday, January 19.
