Arlington, Texas - The UT Arlington women's basketball team dropped a 67-63 decision at home to Stephen F. Austin on Saturday. UTA fell to 5-12 overall and 2-3 in conference action.
The Mavericks struggled with the LadyJacks full court press and had trouble setting up their offense in the first half. UTA connected on just 9-of-33 of their shots from the field.
Both teams went back and forth, tying the game seven times before the LadyJacks closed out the first half on a 7-0 run to head into the locker rooms with a 30-23 advantage.
In the second half, Tamara Simmons and Shalyn Martin carried the Mavs back to a 47-45 lead with 8:58 to go but SFA would go on a 16-0 run to lead by as many as 12.
UTA used a 7-0 run to come within five at 61-56 with 57 seconds remaining. With the Mavericks forced to foul in order to regain possession, the LadyJacks increased their lead by six with 17 seconds left in the game.
Simmons pushed the ball up the floor and connected on a 3-pointer from the top of the key, to bring the Mavs at 66-63 with 13 seconds on the clock. Simmons was issued her fifth foul on SFA's next possession which sent Jordan Ford to line. Ford went 1-of-2 from the free throw line, ending the Mavs comeback.
Despite shooting just 29 percent (20-of-69) from the field, SFA was able to dominate the boards with a 55-42 margin and the free throw line, connecting on 22-of-28 for a 78.6 percentage.
The Mavericks finished the game shooting 38.7 percent (24-of-62) from the field, 23.1 percent (3-of-12) from 3-point range and 66.7 percent (12-of-18) from the charity stripe.
Martin finished the game with a team-high 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field, including 4-of-5 from the line. Martin also added five rebounds, two blocks and 4 steals.
Simmons registered 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds in 37 minutes.
Three LadyJacks finished in double-figures with Ford leading the way with 21 points and 12 rebounds.
UT Arlington travels to San Marcos, Texas on Saturday, January 29 for 4 p.m. match up against Texas State.
