Women's hoops fall 77-60 to Memphis

Memphis, Tenn. - The UT Arlington women's basketball fell to Memphis, 77-60 Sunday afternoon at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse in Memphis, Tenn. The setback dropped the Mavericks to 1-5 on the season.

"Memphis is a very physical team," Morrow said. "Our effort was really good tonight and I feel like this is something we can build on."

Both teams started strong with steady back-and-forth field goals in the opening of the game, but Memphis went on a 4-0 run to give the Tigers the lead.

The Mavericks responded with two free throws from senior Bianca Sauls and a jump shot from sophomore Malaika Green to take the lead back.

Memphis took the lead again on the next possession and kept it for the remaining of the first half.

Memphis was in the penalty with 41.7 seconds left in the first half after fouling guard Kiara Parker who went 1-0 from the line.

UT Arlington headed into the locker room trailing by six with a score of 35-29 to end the first half. Sauls made all three attempted field goals and was perfect from the line in the first half.

In the second half, both teams continued their consistency of back-and-forth scoring. Memphis took a nine point lead hitting back-to-back threes making the score 49-40 with 14 minutes left in the second half.

After several turnovers and miscues by the Mavericks, the Tigers went one a 10-0 run making to score 72-46 with 6:24 left in the game.

The Mavericks fell behind by 20 points, but a turnover forced by Bianca Sauls and an assists to Malaika Green brought the Mavericks within 20 with 3:18 left in the second half.

Freshman Chunandra Williams was the team's leading scorer with 11 points and also came up with three rebounds and three steals.

"Chunandra did some good things defensively," Morrow said. "She's getting a lot of minutes and shooting the ball well for us."

The Tiger's Nicole Dickson had an excellent performance scoring 20 points and grabbing eleven rebounds.

The Mavericks head to Lubbock, Texas December 7 to take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders at 7 p.m. in the United Spirit Arena.

Wednesday's game against the Red Raiders will be the 14th matchup between the two schools...Tech leads the series 12-1...the last time the two schools faced off was in Lubbock where the Red Raiders defeated the Mavericks 71-37 in 2009...The Maverick are 0-7 playing at the United Spirit Arena...UT Arlington's only victory was in 1975 where the Mavs came away with a 75-65 victory in Arlington, Texas.
