The UT Arlington softball team wrapped up the Best Western Marina Grand Invitational Tournament with a 2-3 record. UTA closed out the tournament with a 5-1 win over Cleveland State Saturday afternoon.
UT Arlington at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
UT Arlington opened day three of tournament action with a 9-0 loss against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday morning at Chapman Field.
In her first collegiate start, freshman Alexis Cantu (0-1) took the loss, pitching four innings. Cantu allowed nine runs on seven hits while walking six and striking out two.
Cantu and Courtney Zink were the only Mavericks to record hits in the loss.
The Islanders connected on seven hits, three of which were extra base hits. A&M-Corpus Christi took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first and were held scoreless until the fourth frame where they plated six runs on four hits.
UTA had their chances to score in the game but couldn't connect on a run, leaving four runners stranded.
Vianca Pesina (2-0) recorded the win on the mound, throwing three innings of work, allowing zero runs on one hit. Greta Cecchetti recorded the save for the Islanders, pitching the fourth and fifth inning.
UT Arlington vs. Cleveland State
Rebecca Collom's bat was pretty quite throughout the tournament but in the final game the senior showed why she is still the Mavericks top hitter. Collom blasted her second homer of the tournament in extra innings against the Vikings.
UTA headed into extra innings tied at 1-1 with the international rule in place. Courtney Zink advanced Kallan Thompson to third after reaching base on a fielder's choice. With two runners on, Collom connected on her 26th career home run over the right field fence. The senior finished the game going 1-for-3 with three RBI and a walk.
Sophomore Teri Lyles (1-2) took over in the bottom half of the inning, shutting down the Vikings offense. Lyles picked up her first win of the season, pitching eight innings, allowing one run (earned) on seven hits.
Stephanie Gonzalez gave the Mavericks a 1-0 advantage in the third inning following a single to center field scoring Courtney Enocksen. Enocksen led the inning off with a single to left field.
Cleveland State's Dara Toman tied the game at 1-1 with a solo home run to center field.
Vikings pitcher Tess Sito faced the Mavericks in the opening game and earned the win but UTA was ready the second time around. Sito pitched 5.2 innings, allowing four runs on two hits.
The Mavericks continue tournament action when they travel to College Station, Texas for the Aggie Classic on Friday, February 18-20. UTA opens the tournament with a match up against Wichita State at noon and ends the day facing host Texas A&M at 2:30 p.m.
