Arlington, Texas - The UT Arlington women's basketball team suffered a 66-58 setback to Northwestern State Saturday at Texas Hall. With the loss, the Mavericks fell to 7-19 overall and 4-10 in Southland action.
UT Arlington dropped their fourth straight conference game of the season and gave up a nine straight series win streak against Northwestern State.
Freshman Briana Walker connected on her second double-double of the season with 20 points and 14 rebounds.
Offensively, the Mavericks struggled the entire game and opened the first half only connecting on 7-of-35 of their shots from the floor. The Mavs jumped out to a nine point advantage at the 5:06 mark but saw their lead slowly fade away as the Lady Demons went up by four at 25-21 right before the break.
The Mavericks were able to tie the game at 29-29 with 17:45 left to play in the second half but the Lady Demons came right back and jumped out to a 40-34 advantage at the 13:15 mark.
UTA made their way back into the game by attacking the basket and going to the free throw line. The Mavs made it a six point game at the 2:43 mark following a pair of made freebies by Martin.
UT Arlington tried desperately to come from behind and come up with the win but the Lady Demons held their ground in the final minutes.
The Mavs finished the game shooting a season-low 22.7 percent (15-of-66) from the floor, 14.3 percent (1-of-7) from three points range and 71.1 percent (27-of-38) from the free throw line.
Northwestern State connected on 34 points in the paint and converted 17 points off of the Mavericks 19 turnovers.
Martin finished the game with 18 points on 5-of-15 shooting from the field, including 8-of-10 from the charity stripe. The senior also recorded a season-high seven steals and two blocks.
UT Arlington will have its final home game of the season Wednesday, March 2 against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Seniors Simmons, Martin and LaNell Taylor will all be honored prior to the start of the game. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Texas Hall.
