The UT Arlington softball team finished the UT Arlington Classic with an 8-1 consolation win against Centenary Sunday afternoon at Allan Saxe Field. With the win, the Mavericks improved to 8-7 overall.
UTA finished the tournament with a 3-2 record. The Mavs recorded a pair of wins against Centenary and a victory over Creighton.
Freshman Callie Collins improved her record to 5-1 in the pitching circle and picked up her third win of the tournament. The freshman pitched four complete innings, allowing zero runs on three hits and striking out seven. Collins finished the tournament with a 0.74 ERA in 19 innings pitched and recorded 34 strikeouts. She also held her opponents to a .183 batting average.
As a team, UT Arlington connected on 16 hits while the Ladies only had six in the game. Courtney Enocksen, Ashley McCarroll, and Courtney Zink each finished with multi-hit performances.
The Mavericks plated three runs on five hits in the bottom of the second, jumping out to a 3-0 advantage. Taylor Zink led off with a single down the left field line and advanced to second on a pass ball. Zink moved to third on a ground out to the pitcher by Kersti Rowan. Courtney Enocksen plated Zink with a double to center, giving the Mavs a 1-0 lead.
The inning continued with the Mavs plating another run when Rachel Forshaw ripped a double down the left field line scoring Enocksen. Forshaw scored the Mavericks third run of the game following a sacrifice fly out to center field by Charne Office.
After the Mavs defense held the Ladies scoreless in the third, UTA's Alexis Cantu led off the bottom of the inning with a homer to straight away center. The home run was Cantu's third of the season.
Now leading 4-0, UT Arlington added a solo run in the fourth. McCarroll led off with a double to center field and scored on an error by the Centenary's first baseman.
Centenary scored their first run of the game and second of the tournament in the fifth, to make it a 5-1.
UTA added to their lead in the bottom half of the inning by plating three runs. Erica LeFlore led off by connecting on her third double of the season. LeFlore advanced to third on a wild pitch and Courtney Zink reached on a base on balls. McCarroll connected on her second double of the game and season and plated both LeFlore and Zink. Elizabeth Perez gave the Mavs their eighth run of the game with an RBI single to center field.
Enocksen finished the game going 3-for-4 with an RBI while McCarroll went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI.
Cantu pitched the final three innings of the game for her second save of the season.
Rebecca Collom finished the tournament batting .400 for the Mavs. The senior connected on six hits which included a home run (29th of her career), double and drove in two RBI.
The Mavericks won't have too much time away from Allan Saxe Field as they host their first conference series Tuesday, March 1-2 against Texas State. Game times are set for 4 and 6 p.m. on Tuesday and 2 p.m. on Wednesday.
