Final Stats
Arlington, Texas - The UT Arlington softball team wrapped up day one of the North Texas Classic with a 1-1 record. The Mavs opened the tournament with a 7-6 loss to Louisiana Tech but bounced back in their second game against Ole Miss, winning 3-0.
UT Arlington 6, LA Tech 7
The Mavericks opened the North Texas Classic with a 7-6 loss to Louisiana Tech Friday afternoon.
UTA's bats powered their way to a 5-0 advantage in the top of the first by connecting on five hits.
Freshman Stephanie Gonzalez led off with a single and came around to score following a double by Charne Office, giving the Mavs a 1-0 lead. Rebecca Collom kept the hits coming as she singled and advanced Office to third. With runners at the corners, Alexis Cantu ripped a double, scoring Office and advancing Collom to third. Now leading 2-0, UTA added to their lead after Taylor Zink plated Collom with a single. A fielder's choice by Teri Lyles scored the Mavs fourth run of the game and with the bases loaded LA Tech's pitcher walked in a run, giving UTA a 5-0 advantage.
LA Tech came back in the bottom half of the inning scoring a pair of runs off of two hits, making it 5-2.
Cantu connected on a RBI single to give the Mavericks a 6-2 lead. Louisiana Tech added a solo run in the bottom half of the inning, to make it 6-3.
After a scoreless top third for the Mavericks, LA Tech came back in the bottom half of the inning scoring three runs off of two hits to tie the game at 6-6.
LA Tech recorded the winning run in fourth and held the Mavericks two just two hits and zero runs in the final three innings.
Offensively, the Mavs were led by Charne Office and Alexis Cantu who each recorded multi-hit performances. Office finished the game going 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored while Cantu went 2-for-3 with a double, 2 RBI and run scored.
Lyles (4-6) took the loss on the mound, pitching 2.2 innings, allowing six runs on seven hits while striking out two. Cantu came in relief to pitch the final 3.1 innings and allowed one run on two hits and struck out four.
UT Arlington 3, Ole Miss 0
UT Arlington picked up a 3-0 win against Ole Miss in the second game of the North Texas Classic. The win improved the Mavs to 12-8 overall.
True freshman Callie Collins (7-1) recorded her second shutout of the season on the mound. Collins pitched her fifth complete game of the season, allowing zero runs on five hits while striking out three.
The Mavs defense and pitching was a deadly combination for Ole Miss as they stranded eight runners.
UTA recorded their first win of the game in the second inning when Stephanie Gonzalez singled to center field easily scoring Kersti Rowan.
UT Arlington led 1-0 throughout most of the game until the fifth inning when T. Zink connected on a two RBI single up the middle, giving the Mavericks a 3-0 advantage.
Freshman Taylor Zink led the Mavericks offensively going 2-for-3 with two RBI.
The Mavericks return to the diamond tomorrow for a match up against Wichita State at 12:30 p.m. and end the day playing UTEP at 3 p.m.
UTA faced Wichita State twice this season at the 2011 Aggie Classic in College Station, Texas and recorded wins.
