DALLAS, Tex. - Chad Comer went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and three RBI leading UT Arlington's 19-hit barrage in a 14-0 win over New Orleans on Saturday afternoon at Patriot Field.
The victory secured a sweep of the Dallas Baptist Invitational for the Mavericks (5-5).
"We're playing really good baseball in all areas," UTA coach Darin Thomas said. "We gave up five runs in three games in this tournament and played really good defense and obviously swung good bats. We just have to keep it up and continue to play well tomorrow. We have a really big game tomorrow (against No. 19 Wichita State)."
Daniel Jordan went 4-for-4 with a double, two RBI, a run and a stolen base. Ryan Walker, Michael Guerra, Preston Beck and Philip Incaviglia all had two hits.
Comer started the scoring in the first with a two-run double into the right-field corner. Brian Nephew added a two-run single later in the inning, giving the Mavericks four runs in the frame.
Comer and Jordan Vaughn added RBI in the second.
The Mavs piled on runs in the third on RBI doubles from Incaviglia and Walker and an RBI single from Guerra before Comer struck again with a two-run triple. The triple marked the first in Comer's collegiate career.
"I feel pretty good right now," Comer said. "The key is just not trying to do too much. That's where I get myself in trouble is when I try to do too much and get out of my approach of staying up the middle and getting after the ball."
Staked to a huge lead, UTA starter Michael Oberto (2-0) sailed through his 8.0 innings of work. He held the Privateers (1-9) scoreless on five hits and one walk while striking out four.
Oberto never allowed a UNO player to reach third in picking up the win in the first start of his UTA career.
"I wasn't expecting him to go that long," Thomas said. "I knew he would throw strikes. The biggest thing was we wanted to get as much out of him as we could because we have to play tomorrow. He gave our staff a rest."
Chase Weaver made his collegiate debut by pitching a scoreless ninth to close out the win.
UTA returns home Sunday when it hosts No. 19 Wichita State.
