UTA-Portland State Photo Gallery EL PASO, Tex. - UT Arlington dropped a pair of matches on Saturday, falling 3-0 to Portland State and 3-0 to UTEP at Memorial Gym in El Paso.
The Mavericks were in the match against the Miners but lost key points late in sets, losing 25-23, 25-23, 25-23. Earlier in the day UTA lost to Portland State, 25-16, 25-21, 27-25.
Amanda Aguilera and Tara Frantz led the way with 13 kills each. Frantz also posted a .458 attack percentage.
Aguilera finished as UT Arlington's member on the All-Tournament team for the El Paso Sport Commission Volleyball Invitational.
Eld-hah Kaswatuka added 11 kills while hitting .500 for the match.
The UT Arlington offense turned in a stellar effort against UTEP, hitting .333 through the first two sets. The Mavericks finished with a .313 hitting percentage.
"It was unbelievable match for both teams," UT Arlington coach Diane Seymour said. "It was high-paced and very entertaining. I thought Amanda Welsh spread the ball out very well. Hitting wasn't the problem. We had three kids in double digits and all five hitters hit above .200 with Tara hitting over .450, which is unheard of from an outside hitter."
Welsh narrowly missed her first career 40-assist match, finishing with 39.
Defensively, Alicia Shaffer recorded 17 digs. Megan Casey, Emily Shearin and Aguilera notched seven digs apiece.
However, the Mavs finished with just two blocks.
Against Portland State, Shaffer led the team defensively with 27 digs. Shearin added five blocks to go along with five kills.
Aguilera's 13 kills paced the offense. She and Welsh each tallied nine digs as well.
"We played well in half of the second match against Portland State and well tonight against UTEP," Seymour said. "What we take away from this weekend is we played faster in each match. Yesterday we got an easy win but our play was very slow. This morning we didn't pick up the speed until the third set when it was too late. Tonight we played at a very fast pace. Our goal is to make the other team keep up and, unfortunately, tonight UTEP did."
UT Arlington plays again Tuesday night in a road match against North Texas at 7 p.m.
