ARLINGTON, Tex. - Alicia Shaffer had 23 digs but UT Arlington could not slow the UTSA offensive onslaught during the Roadrunners' 3-0 win Saturday at Texas Hall.
UTSA (8-8, 2-0) hit .232 on its way to a 25-14, 25-21, 25-19 win.
UT Arlington, meanwhile, had a hard time finding rhythm on offense.
Part of the problem came from the Roadrunners, who finished with 10 blocks and held the Mavericks to a .069 attack percentage.
UT Arlington especially struggled out of the gate, hitting -.143 in the first set.
"The disappointing thing to me is we didn't do well on our side of the net," acting head coach Erin Clute said. "When you hit -.143 in a game, that is completely within your control - I don't care who you are playing. We did not seem like we were really prepared to take good swings against a big block at the start of the match. The good thing is you get to play the teams in the West twice.
Tara Frantz led the Mavericks with nine kills. Amanda Aguilera and Charae Grosser added six apiece.
Whitney Walls led the Roadrunners with 16 kills while hitting .538 and posting seven blocks.
"She had an excellent night," Clute said. "She is a really good player. I want to stress that she did an excellent job, but I also think we did a poor job against her. We helped her do well by not handling our business on our side of the net. I do not think we put our preparation into very good use in match play. That is something we will have to do better next time."
Shaffer again proved to be the bright spot for the Mavericks (5-11, 1-1). Her 23 digs give her 45 in the last six sets.
"On most nights we leave feeling like we have one of the, if not the, best libero in the league and tonight was no different," Clute said. "I think she played really well and never seemed too rattled."
Aguilera had seven digs and Megan Casey added six.
UT Arlington plays again Thursday night at 7 p.m. when it hosts McNeese State at Texas Hall.
