SOUTH BEND, Indiana - The UT Arlington men's golf team completed the first day of the Fightin Irish Gridiron Classic.
The team finished the first round with a score of 288, 4-over-par and just one stroke back of first place.
Houston and Michigan State are tied for first with a team score of 287, 3-over-par.
Despite poor weather and a 30-minute rain delay, the Mavericks were able to stay competitive. Paul McConnell and Houston's Curtis Reed are sitting on top of the leader board with a score of 69, 2-under-par.
"It was a cold, wet windy day today, but we were able to finish right before dark," UT Arlington head golf coach Jay Rees said. "We had about six-eight birdies at the end of the day to close the gap and move into one shot behind Michigan State and Houston so we had a great finish. It was a positive day."
Senior Hunter Brown finished the day one even with par and freshman Riley Fleming completed the first round with a score of 72, 1-over-par.
Cameron Holleck and Cash Wilkerson finished the day 5-over-par with a score of 76.
Live in-progress scoring will be available on Golfstat's website for the Fighting Irish Classic throughout the entire tournament.
