Mavericks basketball engages in community outreach

Dec. 11, 2012

ARLINGTON, Texas - The holiday spirit of giving is alive and well with the UT Arlington men's and women's basketball teams. Both teams spent time recently with elementary school students, while the men visited Children's Medical Center in Dallas.

Five students from each grade level at Johns Elementary and Dunn Elementary were selected for this six-week time period by their teachers to participate in the Maverick Superstars program. These students, ranging from kindergarten to sixth grade, have shown outstanding achievement and all-around leadership in the classroom.

These Maverick Superstars got a special pass to leave class to have a meet-and-greet with several of the men's basketball players. The elementary students asked the UT Arlington student-athletes about college and upcoming games.

For their great achievements in and outside of the classroom, the Maverick Superstars from Johns Elementary received free tickets to the men's basketball game Thursday, Dec. 13 against Houston Baptist. Tipoff is 7 p.m.

Students from Dunn Elementary attended the women's basketball game against Texas-Pan American on Dec. 4. The women's team signed autographs and took photos with the kids following the game.
