Ogden, Utah - A feisty UT Arlington men's basketball team saw its school record 16-game winning streak come to an end Saturday, as they lost 72-70 at Weber State, but they did not go down without a fight.
The Mavericks scrapped and scambled their way back into the game to give themselves a chance to win at the end of the game after falling behind by 16 points midway through the second half.
"I am really proud of the way our guys hung in there and fought all game long," UT Arlington head coach Scott Cross said. "We had to scramble to get back into that game and we did and got back into it and never gave up."
Jordan Reves scored with four seconds remaining to make it a two-point game and then LaMarcus Reed stole the ensuing inbounds pass by the midcourt line.
Reed slipped as he turned to get a shot off but gathered himself and was able to get off a 40-foot shot that narrowly missed as the Mavs winning streak ended and keeping them from tying a school record for wins in a season.
"I was just trying to get into a situation where I could get a good look at the basket and try to win the game," Reed said.
Weber State tried to put the game away three times in the second half only to have the Mavericks answer each run.
The first one was at the start of the second half as the Wildcats went on a 16-4 run after the Mavericks led 27-24 at halftime.
Weber State then had their biggest lead of the game at 60-44 but the Mavs went on an 11-0 run to cut that lead to five. The Wildcats then led 68-57 with just over three minutes to play before the Mavs made their final run.
As the Mavericks fouled to stop the clock and get the ball back, Weber State missed a few free throws that allowed UTA to continue on its quest to win the game before the dramatic finish.
After a 3-for-10 start from the field, Reves took his game up a notch and finished with a team-high 18 points and 10 rebounds. Bo Ingram gave the Mavericks another double-double with 16 points and 10 boards, while Reed also finished with 16 points.
Weber State made 10-of-20 3-pointers in the second half and shot 56 percent over the final 20 minutes.
UT Arlington held the nation's leading scorer, Damian Lillard, to seven points under his average as he had 17.
Scott Bamforth scored 16 of his team-high 19 points in the second half to lead Weber State. He also made four 3-pointers early in the second half to spark that 16-4 run.
Weber State shot 56 percent in the second half, including going 10-of-20 from 3-point range, and finished the game at 43.4 percent. UT Arlington shot 45 percent for the game, including 49 including in the second half. The Mavericks also won the rebounding battle 37-35.
The Mavericks turned the ball over only 13 times, including just three times in the second half. They also took advantage of WSU miscues, as they turned 19 turnovers into 15 points.
