Arlington, Texas -
The Southland Conference has announced a forfeiture of Nicholls State’s women’s basketball victory over UT Arlington on Jan. 7, 2012. The league’s compliance committee determined the forfeiture of Nicholls’ 78-59 win after the institution discovered an ineligible student-athlete participated in the game.
The compliance committee ruled that the student-athlete made a noticeable contribution to the win, as described in Southland Bylaw 6.05.01(b), thus the game should be forfeited. After an appeal by the institution, the Southland’s Advisory Council upheld the committee’s decision. Both administrative groups agreed that the institution had no reason to know of the student-athlete’s ineligibility in advance and made the required effort to accurately determine such.
The team records of Nicholls State and UT Arlington will be adjusted to reflect the forfeiture. Heading into Wednesday’s conference games, Nicholls’ overall record reverts to 13-12 (6-6 in Southland games), and UTA’s mark is adjusted to 6-18 overall (4-8 in league play). The adjusted team records will also be reflected in upcoming tournament seeding.
