Palm Desert, Calif. - The UT Arlington men's golf team placed a solid seventh among 24 teams at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at the Classic Club. The final two rounds of the tournament were completed Sunday, with the Mavericks narrowly missing a top-five finish.
"We achieved our goals of minimizing the big numbers and three-putts," UT Arlington coach Jay Rees said. "It was our best three-round total of the year. It was a very good week. We can build on this finish."
UTA was sitting fourth overall after the second round was completed Sunday morning. Pierre Carlsson was in tied for eighth after firing a second-round even-par 71, which matched his opening round. Hunter Brown just a shot back and tied for 13th.
The Mavericks shot a 1-under 287 as a team to trail only UNLV, Texas Tech and Auburn going into the final round.
UTA slipped some in the final round with a 3-over 288. Carlsson's 73 dropped the senior into a tie for 17th with a three-round total of 2-over-215. Brown (73) finished tied 21st. Paul McConnell (T-44, 220), Cameron Hollek (T-59, 223) and Jamey Taylor (T-68, 225) rounded out the UTA weekend.
The Mavericks' stroke total was 863.
UNLV won the tourney with a three-round total of 844. Also finishing ahead of UTA were Texas Tech (851), Auburn (855), St. Mary's (861), Texas A&M (862) and SMU (862).
UTA competes in its next event March 16-17 at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate in Austin.
