MCKINNEY, Texas - The UT Arlington men's golf team survived a windy final day at the 2012 Southland Conference Championship to finish in third place.
The start of the back nine proved to be the difference for UT Arlington as it tried to defend their conference championship from a year ago. The Mavericks registered nine double bogeys on those holes between the five players and that halted any chance the Mavericks would have to defend their title.
"The back nine kept us from making a run today," UTA head coach Jay Rees said. "Holes 10-14 is what cost us. If we had gotten through that we could have had a chance but we had too many doubles and that is where the tournament ended for us."
Although those holes proved to be difficult for UTA, the Mavericks finished the day with a team mark of 303 (+15), which was the third best score of the day. To show how difficult the Stonebridge Ranch Country Club played, six of the 10 teams shot 20-over par or higher Wednesday.
Senior Jamey Taylor was the top UT Arlington finisher as he carded a five-over 77 Wednesday and finished in a tie for fifth at seven-over 223. Taylor parred his first nine holes before going three-over par on the 10th and 11th holes.
"Jamey had the best tournament that he has ever had in college and gave us three great rounds this week," Rees said.
"I started out solid but could never get my putter going," Taylor said. "As the wind got stronger, the course got harder."
UTA's No. 1 player Paul McConnell had the low round of the day for the Mavericks as he shot a one-over 73 to finish the tournament strong after struggling in the first two rounds. He finished the tournament in a tie for 22nd.
He carded a team-high four birdies Wednesday but was those were offset by five bogeys. The junior was the only UT Arlington player to not have a double bogey Wednesday.
Cameron Hollek finished in a tie for 13th after posting a 76 Wednesday and had four birdies on his round. Hunter Brown shot 77 to finish in 28th while Cash Wilkerson in a tie for 33rd.
Lamar defeated Central Arkansas on the first hole of a playoff to earn the team title. The Mavericks will now await a bid into the NCAA Regionals.
