WBB: Sauls named to All-Academic Second Team

April 5, 2012

ARLINGTON, Texas - Senior Bianca Sauls has been named to the All-Academic second team for the Southland Conference.

The Pflugerville native is a fifth-year senior and completed her first year of basketball after playing four years of volleyball for the Mavericks.

Sauls completed her major in broadcast communication with a minor in business administration and will complete her second degree of economics in May. The senior has maintained a 3.64 while leading the Mavericks in scoring and rebounding.

"I really appreciate the academic advisors and the coaches for staying on top of us and helping us keep our primary focus on school," Sauls said. "No pass, no play."

McNeese State junior Ashlyn Baggett has been named the Southland Conference Women's Basketball Student-Athlete of the Year, the league office announced Thursday in conjunction with the release of the women's basketball all-academic teams.

Baggett led the Cowgirls to their second consecutive NCAA tournament appearance after posting a 26-8 overall record with a 13-3 mark in conference play. A native of Iota, La. (Iota H.S.), Baggett helped McNeese successfully defend its Southland Conference tournament title and was named to the all-tournament team. The two-time first-time all-conference selection currently ranks 10th all-time in the Southland in 3-point field goal percentage (.366). Baggett led the Cowgirls in scoring and ranked seventh in the conference with 15.4 points per game. She also was second on the team in assists (2.5) and fourth in steals (1.4). Baggett scored her 1,000th career point against LSU on Dec. 16, 2011, and became McNeese's all-time 3-point career leader against Stephen F. Austin on Feb. 4, 2012, passing the old mark of 178. Her 201 made 3-pointers is the seventh most in Southland history.

A nursing major with a 3.76 grade-point average, Baggett is the second player to be named the women's basketball student-athlete of the year twice, joining Maryann Abanobi from UT Arlington, who received the honor in 2006 and 2007.

There were two automatic selections on the all-academic teams including Baggett and Sam Houston State junior Britni Martin. Each picked up first-team all-conference honors following the season. The other eight all-academic honorees were selected by a vote of the league's head coaches, sports information contacts and academic advisors.
