SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The men's tennis team picked up their first conference win of the season with a 4-3 victory over the UTSA Roadrunners Saturday in San Antonio.
The Mavericks started the day off well by winning the doubles point. No. 1 doubles Mindaugas Celedinas and Soren Goritzka defeated UTSA's No. 1 doubles 8-2 and the other doubles team each won 9-8.
Goritzka played a tough singles match at the No. 2 spot against UTSA's Tyler Brown, but the TCU transfer was able to grab the win from the Mavericks 5-7, 7-6, 7-6.
No. 1 Mindaugas Celedinas and No. 3 Yauheni Yakaukeu also one their singles points for UTA.
"It was as close as it could be," UT Arlington head coach Diego Benitez said. "I'm so proud of Soren for pulling through this match. He raised his level in the tiebreaker and took it home. It was a great match between two feisty teams and I didn't expect anything different."
The Mavericks head to UTPA to take on the Broncs Monday at 2:00 p.m.
