ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington lost its third consecutive Western Athletic Conference game Thursday night at College Park Center in a 59-57 loss to UTSA.
The Roadrunners used a season-high 10 3-pointers and five in the second half to pull away from the Mavs, who trailed by just two points at halftime. With the loss UTA fell to 1-3 in WAC play and 3-11 overall. UTSA improved to 2-3 in conference and 8-8 overall while snapping its two-game losing streak against UTA.
"I thought we turned the ball over a lot in the first half," UT Arlington coach Samantha Morrow. "We got back in it and had a chance. But I am tired of saying that. I have said that a few times the last couple of games. In the first half they just killed us on the offensive boards and I'm disappointed that it's two games we've let get away in conference."
Kamra King scored a career-high 23 points for the Roadrunners with 4-8 shooting from beyond the arc. Laila Suleiman and Malaika Green both had double-digit scoring for the first time since the Mavericks last win on Dec. 29 at New Mexico State. Suleiman ended the game with 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting, while Green led UTA on offense with 12 points.
The Mavericks opened the game by scoring 10 of the game's first 12 points and held the Roadrunners scoreless in the first five minutes. However, the Roadrunners would sprint back on a run of their own and took the lead behind a 12-1 run. Kiara Parker and Eboni Watkins led a counter attack to tie the bout at 24 with under a minute to play in the half.
After UTSA took a two-point lead, UTA had the ball with 11 seconds to play but could not convert on two attempts and ended the half down 26-24.
UTSA started the second half hot behind the 3-point line. The Roadrunners hit three of its first six 3-pointers to extend its lead to nine points with 10:17 to play in the half.
"They hit 10 3-pointers," Morrow said. "They haven't done that all of conference."
Down 10 points with four minutes remaining, Green combined with Rosalyn Thorpe off the bench to bring UTA back within four. Thorpe used her height advantage to block away a Roadrunners shot and then put in a bucket at the other end forcing UTSA into a timeout.
UTA brought the game back to within one with under a minute in the game, but failed to jump into the lead missing two opportunities in the paint.
The Mavericks face Texas State to conclude its two-game homestand this Saturday at 6 p.m.
"We have to have a short memory," Morrow said. "That means coaches too. We have to want it when you wake up and figure out how to beat Texas State. They are a sleeping giant. I don't know how they haven't won a game. We are going to have to step up and take care of business."
