Jan. 17, 2013

Final Stats

SEATTLE, Washington - UT Arlington lost its fifth consecutive Western Athletic Conference game Thursday night at Seattle University as the Mavericks fell 69-53.

"The first half we stayed in there," UT Atlington coach Samantha Morrow said. "They just knocked down a few more shots than we did."

The Mavericks debuted a new lineup including first-time starter Briana Walker. Walker finished the game with six points and six rebounds, but Laila Suleiman led the team with 11 points as she played all 40 minutes. Rosalyn Thorpe picked up eight points in just nine minutes for the Mavericks late in the game.

"We thought we'd put some speed out there with our starting lineup. We knew they'd be bigger than us and we were trying to counter that with some speek," Morrow said.

Both teams started the game with high intensity as the score went back and forth until Seattle U hit back-to-back baskets to take a 16-13 lead. The Redhawks hung on to the lead until junior Aron Garcia scored to give UT Arlington a 19-18 lead.

Seattle U regained the lead as Kiara Parker turned the ball over on three consecutive possessions. A 25-19 lead for the Redhawks forced Coach Morrow to call a timeout in an effort to regain her team's focus. UTA ended a Redhawk shooting spree with a 3-pointer from Suleiman.

The Mavericks headed into the locker room down 30-24. Seattle U shot 44.8 percent from the floor, while UT Arlington shot 32.3 percent.

Seattle U started the second half with an 11-4 run, picking up its first double-digit lead of the game and causing Morrow to call an early timeout.

Suleiman knocked down a 3-pointer for the Mavs to close the gap to eight (51-43), but Seattle U hit consecutive shots shots to give the Redhawks a 12-point lead.

Seattle U shot an impressive 50.9 percent from the floor throughout the game, including 57.7 percent in the second half.

The Redhawks' Kacie Sowell led her team with 18 points and 11 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season.

The Mavericks head to Moscow, Idaho to take on the Idaho Vandals Saturday at Cowan Spectrum at 8 p.m. CST.
