WBB: Jamaika Hughes transfers to UTA

Dec. 30, 2013

ARLINGTON, Texas - Women's basketball coach Krista Gerlich announced the transfer of Jamaika Hughes to UT Arlington.

"We're very excited about her athleticism," Gerlich said. "Her height and length at the guard position is going to be really good for us. Defense is really her specialty and we're look for her to get stops for us."

Hughes spent the fall 2013 semester at Texas Tech before transferring to UT Arlington in December. The Fort Worth native accumulated several accolades in her high school career at Kennedale High School.

Hughes sat out her senior season due to an ACL injury, but proved herself in the previous season posting averages of 14.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.7 steals and 4.5 assists as a junior.

Other honors include Academic All-District Team all four years (2009-13), 2010-11 District 8-3A MVP, 2009-12 First Team All-District, UIL Region I All-Region Team, 2010-12 TABC All-Region Team, 2010-12 TGCA All-State Team and District 8-3A Defensive Player of the Year.

Due to NCAA rules Hughes, will be eligible to play for the Mavericks in December 2014. She has begun practicing with the team.
