SAN JOSE, CALIF. -The Mavericks fell 71-49 to Western Athletic Conference opponent San Jose State Thursday night at The Event Center.
San Jose State reached its largest lead of the game of 23 points with 1:54 to play in the second half. The Mavericks fought to close the gap, but the Spartans 44.4 shooting percentage was too much for UTA.
"We just didn't shoot the ball well," UT Arlington interim head coach Karen Blair said. "They went on a quick run to end the first half anf create a large lead for them."
UT Arlington fell to 6-20 overall and 3-12 in WAC competition while San Jose State stretched to 10-16 and 7-8 in league competition.
Jordan Holub led the Mavericks with 13 points and Kiara Parker grabbed 10 rebounds and three steal for UT Arlington
The Mavericks scored the first bucket of the game, but the Spartans answered back with a 3-pointer to take the lead.
The Spartans lead for the majority of the first period, but the Mavericks refused to back down and Rosalyn Thorpe tied the game at 17 with a jump shot in the paint.
San Jose State went on a 13-2 run to retire the first half with a 30-21 lead over the Mavericks.
UTA shot 7-29 (.241) from the floor in the first half while San Jose State shot 34 percent and out rebounded the Mavs 29-19.
The Spartans began the second half with a 16-4 run before Malaika Green hit the Mavericks first 3-pointer of the game. Green was the first Maverick in double figures after a jump shot to give her 10 points.
Holub would be the only other Maverick to reach double figures with 13 points.
Ta'Rea Cunnigan was 4-7 from beyond the arc and 10-19 shooting from the floor with 28 points to lead both teams in scoring.
The Mavericks are back on the court Saturday, March 2 at 6 p.m. CST as they face Utah State in Logan, Utah for their final road trip of the WAC season.
