ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington women's basketball fell 66-62 to Arkansas State to open Sun Belt Conference competition.

The Mavericks drop to 1-11 overall and 0-1 in league play.

"I was really proud of how we played up until the last two or three minutes," UT Arlington coach Krista Gerlich said. "I think we gave ourselves a chance to win. We need to learn how to play to win, not play to try not to lose."

Freshman Allyson Te'o scored a career-high 12 points after shooting 6-8 from the floor. Desherra Nwanguma and Tahlia Pope also scored in double figures, combining for 22 points.

Arkansas State got out to a 7-0 lead before Laila Suleiman scored a 3-pointer to give the Mavs their first offensive push. UTA trailed for most of the first half until Nwanguma hit a pair of free-throws and a basket to give the Mavericks the lead.

Despite shooting 60 percent from the floor, the Mavs headed into the locker room down 34-33 at the half.

The Mavericks got out to a quick 10-point lead, 46-36, after a 13-0 run to start the first half. The Red Wolves came back to regain the lead 60-58.

The Mavericks are back on the court Saturday as they face UALR at 7:30 p.m. at College Park Center after the men play at 5 p.m.
