BRYAN, Texas - The UT Arlington golf team sits in a tie for fifth after the first round of play at the Miramont Invitational at the Miramont Country Club on Monday.
The team shot a 299, which is 14 shots off tournament leader Houston. Inclement weather forced officials to shorten the originally scheduled 54-hole event to a 36-hole tournament that is scheduled to complete play on Tuesday.
Jake Greenspoon led the Mavericks with a 2-over-par 74 to tie for 19th place after the first round. Cash Wilkerson, Aaron Guanlao and Josh Radcliff each shot a 3-over-par 75 to tie for 28th. Jake Argento rounded out the five-man team with a 77.
"Today was a grind," UT Arlington golf coach Jay Rees said. "We started the morning out with a tornado watch and three inches of rain which cancelled the first round action of the 36-hole day. But the rain stopped and were able to get out for a 1 o'clock shotgun start in the afternoon.
"We started slow, but with an hour or so to go in the round we rallied with a dozen birdies to finish the day with a competitive score of 299. We were led by freshman Jake Greenspoon with a 74, rounding out the scores were three 75s by Cash, Aaron Guanlao, and Josh Radcliff. Our No. 1 man Jake Argento was playing a lot of good golf, but dropped some shots coming in to finish with a 77."
Louisiana's Louis Kelly led individually with a 3-under 69 despite his team sitting in seventh overall. UTA enters the final round of play tied with Southeastern Louisana. Two shots ahead of the Mavericks was UTSA, while conference rival Texas State shot 296 as a team.
The final round is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
