ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington senior center Desherra Nwanguma was named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week on Monday by the Sun Belt and College Sports Madness.
"I'm so proud of how hard Dede has worked even in the face of adversity," UT Arlington coach Krista Gerlich said. "She has led her team, bought into our system and is taking advantage of every opportunity given to her.
"This is a great honor for Dede and also all of her teammates. I've very proud of them."
Nwanguma scored a career-high 34 points in Thursday's 73-54 win over UL Lafayette. She also picked up her sixth double-double of the season by grabbing 13 rebounds. Nwanguma knocked down 13 of 17 shots and 8 of 9 free throws, and blocked three shots against ULL.
Nwanguma is leading the league with 10.1 rebounds per game, shooting 57.7 percent from the floor and averages 1.8 blocks per contest in SBC play. Nwanguma recorded 37 minutes of playing time against ULL and is averaging 32.2 minutes per game in SBC action.
Nwanguma and the Mavericks are back in action Wednesday at UL Monroe in hopes to extend their winning streak to three in a row. UT Arlington is 3-18 overall and 2-8 in the Sun Belt Conference.
