ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington baseball will face crosstown rival No. 16 TCU on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in Fort Worth.
This will mark the first of three meetings between the Mavericks (1-5) and the Horned Frogs (6-1) for the 2014 season. UTA has faced just one other ranked opponent earlier this year. The Mavs fell to then No. 18 Oklahoma State 4-3 in Arlington on Feb. 16.
"This will be the best pitching we'll see all year and it's a tough environment to play in," UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said. "It's a good rivalry game but we can't worry about who we're playing since it will always be a good competition, like TCU."
BROADCAST INFORMATION: The game at TCU will be shown on Fox Sports Southwest. Live stats and audio for the game at TCU can be found by visiting GoFrogs.CSTV.com. For live in-game updates, follow the Mavericks on Twitter (@UTAMavs.com).
UTA'S LAST TIME OUT: UT Arlington baseball split a weekend series with McNeese State, with the third game cancelled due to weather.
The Mavericks defeated the Cowboys 9-8 in a 19-inning game Friday night before falling 6-5 on Saturday afternoon in Lake Charles, La.
RECORD SETTING WEEKEND: UTA's 19-inning game at McNeese State is the longest game played in Maverick history. Justin Copeland tied an NCAA DI record as well as set new Maverick and Sun Belt Conference records with 10 at-bats. Matt Shortall's four doubles in the game set a new UTA all-time record and is tied for the SBC record.
The Mavs hit nine doubles as a team to tie the current UTA record, now done twice with the last coming against TCU in 1993. Derek Miller was hit by four pitches in that game to tie for second in the NCAA DI record books. Finally, Greg McCall's 25 putouts ties him at sixth all-time in DI baseball history.
All-TIME AGAINST TCU: TCU leads the all-time series against UTA 90-55. In the last meeting, the Frogs edged the Mavs 2-1 on May 14, 2013 in Fort Worth.
THIRD YEAR, THIRD CONFERENCE: The Mavericks baseball team will be in their third conference in as many years with the move to the Sun Belt Conference. UTA moved from the Southland Conference in 2012 to the Western Athletic Conference in 2013.
BACK-TO-BACK CHAMPIONSHIPS: UT Arlington finished the 2013 season with 31-27 record and a share of the Western Athletic Conference regular-season title. It was UTA's second consecutive championship (2012 SLC Tournament). McCall (second-team), Shortall (first-team) and Vachon (second-team) earned All-WAC honors last season.
MAVS PICKED FIFTH IN PRESEASON: The Mavericks were picked to finish fifth in their first season in the Sun Belt Conference by league coaches.
PRESEASON PLAYER HONORS: Shortall was named to the 2014 Louisville Slugger preseason All-American third-team, as well as the preseason All-SBC team. Shortall and Vachon also earned preseason All-SBC honors from College Sports Madness.
