WALNUT, Calif. - UT Arlington's distance runners turned in impressive performances Thursday and Friday at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays, picking up some of the league's best marks and etching their names into the UTA record books.
"Our athletes ran well and took advantage of the opportunity that a great meet provides," UTA coach John Sauerhage said. "They all continue to improve and we are excited for them."
Craig Lautenslager established a new UTA record in the 5000m by breaking his own personal best by 11 seconds. His time of 14:20.90 was eight seconds faster than teammate Ryan Tilotta's clocking earlier this season.
In the steeplechase, Emil Blomberg netted a time of 8:53.86, which was just two seconds off his school record time. The mark is currently one of the top 15 times in the NCAA West Preliminary Round qualifying.
In addition, Gabriela Alfonzo placed third in her 10000m race with a time of 36:10.21. It is the third fastest time in school history and was a personal record by well over one minute.
In the men's 10000m, Eric Ojeda also landed a top-5 time in school history. His run of 30:36.76 ranks as the best in the Sun Belt Conference this season.
Other competitors included Virgilio Martinez in the 5000m (14:27.88), as well as Robert Gribble (31:39.91) and Carlos Arias in the 10000m (32:09.75).
