SAUCIER, Mississippi - A strong opening round Monday across the board has UT Arlington leading the Sun Belt Conference Men's Golf Championship. The Mavericks shot a 2-under-par 286 at Grand Bear Golf Course for a two-stroke edge over Georgia State.
"We made good decisions and just kept competing for every shot," UT Arlington coach Jay Rees said. "When we got over par, they found a way to make birdies. They are starting to believe in each other and the guys believe in what they're doing out there. It's fun to see the confidence, and our best golf is still out there."
UT Arlington had three players in the top 10, led by Joss Gosling tying for fourth with a 2-under 70. Jake Argento (T6, 71) and Brad Mason (T10, 72) were also within four shots of co-leaders Tyler Klava (South Alabama) and Stuart Smallwood (Texas State), both at 4 under. The other two Mavericks were Cash Wilkerson (T14, 73) and Zach Galliford (T23, 76).
"Joss and Jake both finished strong, making birdies coming in," Rees said. "Cash and Brad were consistent all day, but both feel they left shots out there. Zach played solid on the back nine, just did not get anything going his first nine holes."
South Alabama is third after posting a five-over par 293.Arkansas State's Easton Key is in third after finishing the day with a three-under 69, while GSU's Damon Stephenson and UTA's Gosling are tied for fourth at two-under. Monday was a day for low scoring as 13 players currently sit at even-par or better, three of those scores under 70.
