KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Jake Argento fired a final-round 71 on Sunday to tie for 23rd place, and UT Arlington finished 11th at The Invitational at The Ocean Course. The Mavericks shot a 9-over-par 297, their best round of the tournament and a five-shot improvement from the second round. Argento, a senior, moved up 17 spots after his 1-under par showing UTA and shot the best round of the weekend for UTA. Freshman Aaron Guanlao also moved up Sunday and tied for 25th in his first collegiate event. Zach Galliford (T33), Josh Radcliff (T60) and Joss Gosling (T73) round out UTA's showing.
"We got a little better every day," UT Arlington coach Jay Rees said. "That is a positive. Jake Argento and Aaron Guanlao both played consistent enough to exempt themselves for the next tourney in Albuquerque. We have a lot of work ahead of us and we have to get better with our ball-striking stats.
Galliford did some really good things out on the course as well. Just a couple of missed shots kept him from being par today. Overall, we need everyone to make a greater contribution. The competition will keep getting tougher."
The Mavericks return to action Sept. 26 at in the William H. Tucker Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
