MANHATTAN, Kan. â€" UT Arlington was unable to replicate its Tuesday night performance as it fell 61-41 to Kansas State on Thursday at Bramlage Coliseum.
The Lady Mavericks (3-4) had their two-game winning streak snapped at the hands of a poor shooting performance. Shooting 51.0 percent against SFA in Tuesday's win, the Lady Mavs struggled to get a rhythm and finished at a 27.3 percent clip.
Kansas State (5-1) was lethal from beyond the arc, using the trey to pull away from UTA. The Wildcats hit nine overall in the contest to UTA's four, including five from Kindred Wesemann on the way to her game-high 19 points.
Turnovers prevented the Lady Mav offense from igniting any attempt at a comeback as it fell down by double digits early in the second quarter. The Lady Mavs turned the ball over 22 times in the contest.
The Wildcats improved to 3-0 all-time against UTA, defeating the Lady Mavs for the second consecutive year.
Turning point
The Lady Mavericks scored just six points in each of the first two quarters and had just 12 points at the break. UTA's defense kept it respectable, but a 20-11 third quarter for Kansas State left little doubt in the outcome as K-State pulled away.
Key Stats
Breck Clark scored a career-high nine points, all in the second half. Clark was 3-5 from the field and had three steals in the fourth quarter. UTA took 55 shots overall in the game, hitting just 15. K-State held a 29-point advantage during the fourth quarter, its largest lead of the game.
Notable
UTA has not defeated a Power 5 conference team since 2006 (Ole Miss) and hasn't picked up a Big 12 win since 2004 (Kansas). The Lady Mavs are 0-2 against the conference this season, falling to No. 5 Baylor in the Preseason WNIT opener.
Up next
UT Arlington enjoys a 10-day break after playing two on the road in three days. The Lady Mavs return to College Park Center on Dec. 13 against Western Kentucky in a battle of former SBC foes. WKU departed for C-USA after UTA's first season in the conference.
Quotable
UTA coach Krista Gerlich on her team's performance
"Kansas State is a really good basketball team. They have a lot of weapons. They can definitely shoot the basketball well. They kind of jumped on us early and kind of punched us in the mouth, and we never did respond. I am disappointed in our effort and that we did not respond better to that, but also, I think you have to give credit to K-State for just having a little bit of swag and knowing that they were supposed to win that ball game. They came out and played like it."
Gerlich on what she will focus on in practice during the break
"Toughness. We have got to play harder. We have to be tougher than that. I thought we had some opportunities in the first quarter to really get to the rim and be aggressive on the inside, and we passed it out every single time. We shot two free throws the whole first half, so we just have to get tougher mentally and physically."
