BASTROP, Texas -- Aaron Guanlao sits 10th and UT Arlington is eighth after Monday's first two rounds of the Jim West Intercollegiate at Wolfdancer Golf Club.

Guanlao shot a 2-under-par 70 in the afternoon to finish the day with a two-round total of 1-under 143. The freshman from Haslet, Texas is five shots back of leaders Blake Pugh from Stephen F. Austin and Pep Angles of Central Arkansas.

The rest of the scoring Mavericks were Jake Greenspoon (T30, 147), Zach Galliford (T39, 149), Cash Wilkerson (T39, 149) and Jake Argento (T46, 150). Joss Gosling, playing as an individual, is tied for 24th after a 2-over 146.

"We did not get off to a good start in the first round," UTA interim coach Stuart Powell said. "The guys fought the strong winds and quick greens, not handling either very well. Our two freshmen led the team scoring with Guanlao shooting a plus-1 and Jake Greenspoon a plus-2.

"I was extremely excited to see the way they played. Also a bright spot for the first round was the play of Joss Gosling  who shot even-par 72. Joss is playing as an individual and his score does not count in the team score. I was happy to see him playing well coming off a shoulder injury."

UT Arlington did much better in the second round, shaving 15 shots off a morning team total of plus-13 301. The Mavericks were 12th after the opening round, but a 2-under 286 moved UTA up four spots.

"The team settled down in the second round and played much more relaxed and with confidenc," Powell said. "Aaron Guanlao again led the team with his 70. Senior Cash Wilkerson followed close behind with a 71. Zach Galliford also rebounded from his first round to shoot even. Jake and Jake each shot 73 to round out the team total of minus-2.

"Though it was not enough to take us into the top 5 on the leaderboard, it did move us up into eighth position. We need to get off to a good start tomorrow to put ourselves into contention. The guys are ready for the challenge."

Saint Mary's leads the 15-team field at 7 under, two shots ahead of Sam Houston. The third and final round begins Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m.
