Oct. 30, 2016 EL DORADO, Ark. - A pair of Mavericks are among the top 10 individuals and the UT Arlington men's golf team sits in fifth place after the first round of competition in the inaugural Duck Commander Intercollegiate at Mystic Creek Golf Club.
After a strong start, the Mavericks struggled down the stretch to turn in a first round score of 16-over par 304 and are four strokes behind host ULM and five behind third place Little Rock. Stephen F. Austin State leads the tournament after firing a 6-over par 294 for a one stroke lead over Arkansas State.
Each program competes with five golfers with the low four scores of each round counting toward the team total. The 60-golfer field will begin play with tee times off hole nos. 1 and 10 beginning at 8:30 a.m. For the second straight round, UTA is paired with golfers from the host Warhawks and Oregon State.

Juniors Nick Barney and Aaron Guanlao are among eight golfers tied for eighth place after today's first round after turning in a 2-over par 74.
Barney, a native of Brisbane, Australia, struggled early with a pair of bogeys in his first three holes. He quickly settled down and got back to even par with birdies on hole nos. 5 and 8. After a bogey on the 427-yard 9th hole, he rebounded with two more birdies to move to 1-under with seven holes to play. A bogey and No. 13 and a double bogey on 17 sealed his final score.
Guanlao posted a nearly opposite performance early in his round with three birdies and two bogeys in his first five holes. The Haslet, Texas native then registered eight straight birdies to sit at 1-under par with five holes remaining. He settled for a 2-over after carding three bogeys down the stretch.
Senior Zach Galliford is just one stroke back at 3-over par and is tied with Bailey Smith of Southeastern Louisiana for 16th place. Classmate Josh Radcliff is tied for 41st at 9-over par, while Tanner Gore and Will Dennis are tied for 50th at 11 over. Dennis is playing the tournament as an individual.
