ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington junior transfer Christina Devers was named the College Sports Madness Sun Belt Player of the Week, announced on Monday.
Dever's averaged 18.5 points over the course of two games and guided the Lady Mavericks to a 2-0 record for the week and to 3-0 overall for the first time since the 1999-00 season.
"Christina is an exciting player and has brought a lot to our transition offense," UT Arlington coach Krista Gerlich said. "What a great honor for her to be recognized in her first couple of weeks as a Lady Mav. She is creating shots for her teammates and her athleticism on defense has added to our press.
The Bixby, Okla. native opened the week with an impressive performance on the road against Western Kentucky, who was receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches' Poll. Devers scored a team-high 15 points in the 71-68 win. She followed it up with a 22-point outburst against Wichita State at College Park Center on Sunday, knocking down 11-of-14 of her free-throw attempts.
UTA looks to remain perfect when it hits the road for a two-game trip to the northeast. The Lady Mavericks take on San Diego State in the first round of the Seton Hall Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday in South Orange, N.J. A win would clinch the best start since a 7-0 beginning to the 1977-78 season.
