ARLINGTON, Texas
- After seven days between games, UTA women's basketball returns to the hardwood on Sunday vs. Texas A&M-Commerce at 5 p.m. at College Park Center.

The Lady Mavericks (6-2) took care of business in their previous matchup vs. Eastern New Mexico, helped along by a 12-0 run in the second quarter to build up a double-digit lead it would keep throughout. A win for UTA would give the Lady Mavs their best nonconference record under coach Krista Gerlich and would be the best since 2008-09 when they won eight.

"We have given them a few days off and got some mental rest and let them focus on their grades," Gerlich said. "Then we approach it that we are going to come in and make our team better, so when we do practice we need to make sure they give us two hours of extreme effort and focus on basketball and they have done a good job in that. It has been a good break for us, all around in the classroom and on the court."

All Lady Mavericks games are broadcast on Mavs All-Access with Amanda Kent calling the action. The subscription based service starts at $9.99 per month and gives fans access to all Lady Mavs games. The first 250 children will receive a free UTA stocking.

UTA owns a 9-2 record all-time against the Lions (7-3). Texas A&M-Commerce won the first two meetings, while UTA has won the last nine.

The Lady Mavs are coming off a week in which they went 1-1. Rebekah VanDijk earned her second Sun Belt Player of the Week award after averaging 15.0 points and seven rebounds a game. VanDijk moved into UTA's all-time top-10 on Sunday against ENMU.

"It is a great honor for the conference to recognize our kids and that they are performing at high levels against high completion," Gerlich said. "As long as our kids continue to work hard and improve it is great recognition for them."

Over the course of the last two games, UTA's defense has been one of the best in turning teams over. The Lady Mavs turned the Greyhounds over 27 times and K-State 26 times. Improving their TO average, UTA has moved up to 11th in NCAA Division I at 23.1 turnovers per game.

"We are turning people over quite a bit and that certainly helps us," Gerlich said. "What we need to work on is our scoring defense and really locking down. Our field-goal defense when we don't get a steal or turnover that we settle down and be solid and get stops."

The 2017 Sun Belt Conference Men's and Women's Basketball Championships are scheduled for a week of March Madness in the Big Easy.
