MG: UTA remains fifth at Sun Belt Championship

MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. -
Georgia State's Alexander Herrmann bounced back from a round one 78 to card a 7-under 64 in round to as he improved 35 spots in the individual standings and paced the team leading Panthers in day two of the 2016 Sun Belt Conference Men's Golf Championship.

UT Arlington remained in fifth place after a 1-over-par 285. The Mavericks made a five-shot improvement from the first round, led by the blistering 6-under 65 by Aaron Guanlao. The sophomore jumped up 32 spots into a tied for 10th with a minus-1 141.

Josh Radcliff is also tied for 10th. Tanner Gore and Andrew Sirowy are tied for 28th with matching 147s. Jake Greenspoon (155) is tied for 50th. Radcliff was the only other Maverick to break par in the second round with a 1-under 70.

"Nice day for Aaron and Josh," UTA coach Stuart Deane said. "They led the team and have kept us in the hunt for a top-four spot to get to the match play. We are due for a solid team effort. The team is looking forward to the challenge the third round brings."

UTA is three shots back of fourth-place Troy. The top four teams after Tuesday's third round advance to Wednesday's match play championship. UL Monroe is in sixth, five back of fourth place and South Alabama is six strokes back in seventh.

Herrmann's 64 was just two strokes off of the overall Raven Golf Club record of 62. Herrmann flirted with the record but was done in by a double-bogey on the front nine and a bogey on the back nine leaving him at 64 for the round and even-par for the tournament. Herrmann's 64 was one shot better than teammate JJ Grey's 65 in round one.

Herrmann recorded eight birdies on the day, including an eagle on the par-5 third hole.

As a team the Panthers kept the lead as they carded their second consecutive round under par, this time shooting a 5-under 279 in round two as they kept a six-shot lead in the tournament. JJ Grey continued to lead the individual standings as the Kent, England native carded his second consecutive round under par, shooting a 1-under 70. Grey closed his round two with a bogey and double-bogey but he remains the clubhouse leader at 7-under, two strokes ahead of Texas State freshman Chase Ambrose.

Arkansas State moved up to second-place in the standings with a round two low of 278. The Red Wolves were paced by Andrew Huseman who finished round two with a 5-under 66. Oswin Schlenkrich also went under par as he fired a 2-under 69. Tanner Napier fired an even-par 71 as he sits in a tie for seventh overall.

The Bobcats recorded a 3-under 281 in round two as they sit in third place in the team standings, led by Ambrose's 66 and Justin Newby's 1-under 71. Troy is fourth in the standings. The Trojans carded an even-par 284 in round two, improving on their round one total of 288.

The individual champion will be crowned after tomorrow's third round with four strokes separating the top six. Troy's Calum Masters, another freshman, is tied with Ambrose at 5-under while ULM's Velten Meyer, Little Rock's Noah Tullos and USA's Daniel Jansen are all tied for fourth at 3-under.

All but two teams on day two saw its scores lowered as day two is typically moving day for many teams.

Round two played out to be the easier of the first two rounds despite the course playing slightly longer on a few holes. Four eagles were recorded on Monday with three coming on the third hole, a par-5. The fourth eagle was recorded on the No. 10 hole, a 379-yard par-4.
