SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Utah raced out of the gates and UT Arlington could not recover as the Lady Mavericks suffered their first loss of the season, a 71-41 setback at the Jon M. Huntsman Center on Monday night.

The Lady Mavericks trailed 17-4 after the first quarter and were shooting just 29.2 percent at the half as Utah's offense was hitting on all cylinders. The loss ended UTA's bid of posting its best start to the season since 1977 as it went to 5-1 for the season. The Lady Mavs return back to College Park Center for their next contest as they take on Houston at 7 p.m. on Friday.

UTA, without a win against a Power 5 opponent since 2004, was unable to get things going in its first of four against the top level this season.

Utah's 6-foot-6 center Emily Potter was a tough matchup as the senior led all scorers with 16 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double, the first against UTA this season. Potter led the Utes' efficient attack by knocking down 6-of-9 shots, while Utah shot a season-high 51.8 percent in the game.

Daiane Machado produced her second double-digit scoring performance of the season, knocking down 10 points to be UTA's lone scorer in double figures.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter: The Lady Mavs were unable to control any momentum in the first quarter as turnovers plagued the offense. UTA turned it over nine times, including five in the first three minutes of the game. Utah took advantage and raced out to a quick 9-0 lead before Rebekah VanDijk's jumper fell with 4:43 in the period.

Second Quarter: UTA's offense settled in during the second quarterly, however, Utah's offense was even hotter. The Utes would hit on six consecutive shots down the floor to match a streak of four from UTA. The streak moved the lead to 20 points with less than two minutes to go in the quarter.

The Utes finished the first half shooting 51.6 percent from the field, including outscoring the Lady Mavs 28-2 in points in the paint.

Third Quarter: The Lady Mavs seemed to settle into the contest early in the third quarter as they matched the Utes in the second-half score column 6-6 with five minutes in the third. It was the Utes once again that would go on a run. Utah outscored the Lady Mavs 9-1 over a two-minute stretch, including back-to-back 3-pointers.

Fourth Quarter: UTA opened the quarter with momentum carried over from the third. The Lady Mavs built up a 6-0 run to cut the lead down to 19 points, but a 13-2 advantage during a five-minute stretch of the period closed out the contest.

MILESTONE NOTES
Senior Rebekah VanDijk surpassed the 1,300-point plateau, just the eighth player in UTA history to do so. With 1,303 points in her career, she is just 13 short of tying for seventh in program history. VanDijk grabbed six rebounds to tie for 19th in Sun Belt history with 892 in her career.
