GOLF: Guanlao posts flawless first round in Little Rock

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- UTA junior Aaron Guanlao fired a par of under par rounds and sits just two strokes off the lead after the first two rounds of the Little Rock First Tee College Classic At Chenal Country Club.

As a team, the Mavericks finished the day at 6-over par and are in fourth place in the 13-team field. The tournament's final round is scheduled to begin with a shotgun start at 8 p.m. tomorrow. UTA is paired with golfers from Central Arkansas and Eastern Michigan.

A native of Haslet, Texas, Guanlao carded rounds of 69-71 for a 4-under par 140. He is tied with Zach Coats of Little Rock and is two shots behind leader Blake Stock of Stephen F. Austin, who turned a 4-under 68 after opening the tournament with a 2-under par 70.

Sophomore Tanner Gore posted identical rounds of 73 to finish the first day of competition with a 2-over par 146 and is in a7-golfer tie for 18th place in the 78-golfer field. After opening with a 3-over 75, senior Zach Galliford improved by two strokes in the afternoon and finished at 4-over for a tie for 29th place.

Camilo Avila, a sophomore from Bogota, Colombia playing in his third tournament of the season, went 74-75 for a 5-over par and is tied for 37th overall. Senior Josh Radcliff is tied for 61st at 11-over.

After opening the tournament with a birdie on his first hole, the 412-yard, par 4 No. 16, Guanlao proceeded to post a bogey-free first round. He registered a birdies on the 455-yard No. 3 and the par 5, 525-yard 7th hole. He closed out the round with 8-straight pars.

In the afternoon round, Guanlao once again opened with a birdie on No. 16, but fell to even par with his first bogey of the day on the par 3 17th. After dropping a stroke with a bogey on No. 3, he rebounded with 3-straight birdies on Nos. 5, 6 and 7. He improved to 3-under with a birdie on the par 5 10th hole before a pair of bogeys on Nos. 11 and 12 dropped him to 1-under for the round and 4-under for the tournament.

Following the Little Rock First Tee College Classic, UTA closes out its regular season April 10-11 at the Jim West Intercollegiate at Wolfdancer Golf Club in Lost Pines, Texas. The Sun Belt Championships are scheduled for April 23-25 at Raven Golf Club in Miramar Beach, Fla.
