BOSTON, Mass. -- For the second straight season, UTA men's basketball coach Scott Cross has been named a finalist for the Skip Prosser award.
Cross, who recently concluded his 11th season as the head coach at his alma mater, led UTA to a 27-9 record and the program's first Sun Belt Conference regular season title. The Mavericks set a program best for most wins in a season and advanced to the quarterfinals of the National Invitation Tournament, winning at BYU and against Akron in the event's first two rounds.
The Garland native owns a 204-148 career record, all at UTA, and earned Sun Belt Conference and NABC District 24 Coach of the Year honors. He guided junior forward Kevin Hervey to league Player of the Year honors after the Arlington native missed the final 19 games of last season due to a season-ending knee injury.
Cross is the second-longest tenured Division I head men's basketball coach in the state of Texas and is the winningest coach I program history. He led the Mavericks to a number of program highlights in 2016-17, including their first-ever win over a top 25 program, with a 65-51 victory at then No. 12-ranked Saint Mary's, and the first win over the University of Texas in series history.
Named after the late Skip Prosser, who died suddenly in 2007 while the head coach at Wake Forest, the award is presented annually to those who not only achieve success on the basketball court but who also display moral integrity off of it as well.
Prosser posted a career record of 291-146 in 14 seasons as a head coach at Loyola, Xavier and Wake Forest. During his time at Wake, Prosser's teams averaged 21 wins per season.
The recipient of the 2017 Prosser award will be announced in Phoenix, Ariz., the site of the men's NCAA Division I Basketball Championship.
