WBB: VanDijk earns UTA's 6th SBC POTW honor

March 6, 2017

ARLINGTON, Texas - UTA junior center Rebekah VanDijk heads into the postseason with momentum after being named the Sun Belt Player of the Week, announced by the league on Monday

VanDijk scored 20.0 points per game over the final two games of the regular season and picked up two double-doubles in games against ULM and Louisiana. The pair of wins gave UTA a 21-7 overall record and the No. 2 seed in next week's tournament. The honor was UTA's sixth of the season, most in the conference, and VanDijk's third.

"Rebekah had a good week and is playing some of her best basketball," UTA coach Krista Gerlich said. "She has good confidence rolling into the Sun Belt Championship tournament this week."

The Nazareth, Texas native was named to the SBC All-Conference first team earlier in the day, her second consecutive top-team selection.

VanDijk posted a 24-point game against ULM and grabbed 10 rebounds. The junior scored on her first eight field-goal attempts and was 11-of-14 from the field overall. She continued the momentum with 16 points against Louisiana on Saturday to conclude the regular season and added 13 rebounds

With her point total for the week, VanDijk jumped into UTA's all-time top-10 in scoring as well as third in the history books for career rebounds.

UTA, earning a first-round bye, takes on the winner of No. 7 Georgia State and No. 10 South Alabama on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Lakefront Arena in New Orleans.
