ARLINGTON, Texas - Helping the Lady Mavericks to their first postseason appearance since 2009, UTA assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Ashley Crawford was named the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches DI Assistant Coach of the Year.

Crawford helped a coaching staff that saw the Mavericks finish 22-9, the third most wins in program history, and amongst the nation's best in turnovers forced per game. Crawford has been a coach at UTA since 2013.

"Congratulations to coach AC," UTA head coach Krista Gerlich said. "This is a tremendous honor for her and our program. I couldn't agree more with the selection of assistant coach of the year. AC is a tireless worker who leaves no stone unturned in recruiting, she does a great job coaching our guards and is an excellent representative for our program."

Under Crawford's watch, UTA has featured standout guards, including junior Cierra Johnson. Johnson has been amongst the nation's top leaders in steals per game and was named the 2016-17 Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year. Former Mav Amara Wainwright was helped along by Crawford in setting the 3-point percentage record, only to be broken by this year's standout shooter Crystal Allen.

The 2014 signing class was ranked the tops in the Sun Belt with help from Crawford's recruiting efforts.

"Someone told me the other day it seems like they see coach AC in every gym they go to," Gerlich said. "That is what I like to hear about our recruiting coordinator. She brings joy and energy into our offices and I'm so proud she is being recognized by such a great professional organization as TABC. She is definitely one of the best and compliments what I think is the best staff in the country."

UTA reached the Sun Belt tournament semifinals for the first time in 2017, and earned a berth in the Women's NIT.
