ARLINGTON, Texas -- UTA opened the first two sets with wins but Houston Baptist rallied to claim the final three to win a five-set thriller (25-18, 25-22, 20-25, 22-25, 5-15) to post a win over host UTA in the second day of the Maverick Classic, on Friday night at College Park Center.
UTA (5-6) opened up the match strong with wins in the first two sets but Houston Baptist (8-4) rallied to win the next two sets to force a fifth set. The Huskies outlasted UTA in it's second five-set match of the season, getting a strong effort from senior standout Bailey Banks, who finished with 17 kills and 14 digs.
LEADING THE MAVS
The Mavs got a match-high 25 kills from senior Qiana Canete, who added three assists and six digs. Junior Zhanelle Geathers added 20 kills, with Madison McConnell sporting nine kills and Kylie Jedlicka owning eight kills. Freshman setter Kailyn Gilbreath had a career-high 52 assists, adding 13 digs in her first career double-double. Junior Libbie Vickers set a career high with 27 digs, adding seven assists. UTA also got two kills from Tessa Harfield and a 13-dig outing from senior Ashlynn Ford.
NEXT
The Mavs will return to action with a doubleheader on Saturday, facing Lamar at 12 p.m. CT and Arizona State at 6 p.m. at College Park Center. Arizona State and Houston Baptist wrap up its stay in the Maverick Classic at 10 a.m.
SET ONE
UTA opened the match with the first three points of the set, before HBU went on a 4-0 run to take a 5-3 lead. The Mavs fought back to even it up at 8-8 on a kill from Jedlicka and Canete tied it back up at nine after her second kill. The Mavs became the first to 15 but HBU took its first lead since 8-7 with a 16-15 advantage, with UTA's Coach J.T. Wenger calling his first timeout. The Mavs then went on a 10-2 run to win the set out of the timeout, with UTA getting four kills in the set from Canete and Geathers.
SET TWO
The Mavs opened the scoring in the second set and used a 4-0 run to take a 6-3 lead. UTA used a kill from Geathers for an 11-9 lead and Canete's monster kill gave UTA a 12-9 lead and forced a timeout from Houston Baptist. With a 15-10 lead, UTA saw HBU go on a 4-0 run to cut it to one and force a UTA timeout. HBU went on an 8-3 run to even up the match at 18-18 but UTA scored the next two to force a timeout. The Huskies scored the next three points to even up the match at 21-21. Out of the timeout, HBU was awarded a point but it was overturned after a replay review was requested by Wenger. UTA then scored the next three points to finish off the set win, 25-22.
SET THREE
The Huskies came out strong in the third, as the Mavs found themselves in a 5-1 hole. UTA then scored the next six, with the final coming on a second overturned replay review from Wenger, to take a 7-5 lead. HBU scored eight of the next 13 to take a 13-11 lead - its first lead since 5-1 - and force a UTA timeout. HBU scored five of the next eight points to take an 18-14 lead into the final UTA timeout of the game. UTA came out of the timeout on a5-3 run to cut the HBU lead to 21-19 and force a timeout. HBU scored four of the last five points in the set to earn the win and force the fourth game.
SET FOUR
The Mavs found themselves fighting from behind in the fourth set, spending their first timeout while trailing 7-5. UTA evened up the set at 11 and HBU was able to hold off a Maverick comeback to post a 25-22 win and force the final set.
SET FIVE
The fifth set went into a 4-4 tie early before a 5-0 run from HBU stretched its lead to 9-4 and forced a Wenger timeout. The Huskies then finished off the set after the UTA timeout for the five-set win.
