MBB: Ogden signs Tyler JC point guard Brian Warren

April 18, 2018

ARLINGTON, Texas -- In his first couple of weeks on the job, UT Arlington men's basketball coach Chris Ogden has gotten off to a quick start on the recruiting circuit.

Ogden, who was named UTA's eighth head coach in program history on April 6, announced the signing of Tyler Junior College point guard Brian Warren. The Indianapolis, Ind. native played for head coach Mike Marquis at TJC and will join the Mavericks this summer as Ogden's first UTA signee.

"We are excited to add Brian to our UTA family," said Ogden. "His character and leadership, combined with his ability to control the game from the point guard position, are things that we value highly as we look to start our program."

Warren, who earned Most Valuable Player honors in leading TJC to the NJCAA Region XIV Tournament championship last month, started all 62 games in two seasons and led the Apaches to a sparkling 50-12 overall record. He averaged 15.5 points and 5.5 assists last season and surpassed the 20-point mark nine times while shooting .456 from the field.

"Brian is an outstanding player who led us to 50 wins over the last two years," said Marquis. "His leadership, scoring and passing abilities will make him very popular with his teammates. He has a playing style UTA fans will really enjoy watching."

Warren is a 2016 graduate of Howe High School, where he led the Hornets to the Class 2A state finals as a senior. In two seasons at Howe, he helped lead the team to a 41-12 record and averaged 20.9 points per game. As a senior, he was named all-state by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association and was presented with the Arthur L. Trester Mental Attitude Award by the Indiana High School Athletic Association. The award, which began in 1917, goes to the outstanding senior participant in each classification of the boys basketball state finals.

Warren joins an incoming class at UTA that includes TJC teammate TiAndre Jackson-Young, Jacksonville College forward Jabari Narcis and incoming freshmen Mason Hix, McKade Marquis and Colton Sandage.
