Lady Mavs Outlast App State In Double Overtime Thriller

ARLINGTON, Texas – Redshirt senior Cierra Johnson and freshman Katie Ferrell combined for 50 points in UTA's wild 99-94 double-overtime victory over Sun Belt Conference foe Appalachian State on Thursday night at College Park Center.

With the win, UTA secures their sixth consecutive OT victory and improves to 10-4 overall (2-1 SBC), while App State falls to 7-7 on the season and 1-2 in SBC play.

C. Johnson finished with a career-high and game-high 29 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field, 1-of-2 from behind the arc and 8-of-11 from the charity stripe. C. Johnson also added four boards, four assists and six steals. Her six steals moved her into eighth place on the Sun Belt career steals list (279). Ferrell recorded her first collegiate double-double with a career-high 21 points and career-high 17 rebounds. She also added six dimes, three steals and a pair of blocks. Lauren Billie chipped in with 15 points, while Claire Chastain added 10 points off the bench. Laurynn McGowen and Brooke Alexander finished with eight points each and Terryn Milton registered seven points and a game-high seven assists.

UTA tied a season-high with 99 points and shot 50.8 percent from the floor (31-of-61), while App State knocked down 33-of-74 shots from the field (44.6 percent). The Lady Mavs forced the Mountaineers into 23 miscues and outrebounded App State on the offensive boards, grabbing 13 offensive rebounds to App State's five.

The game went back-and-forth and featured six lead changes and five ties in the OT periods alone. The game was also called very tight by the refs, as 56 total fouls were called on the night.

In the second overtime period, UTA split a pair of free-throws on back-to-back trips to take a 91-89 lead. App's Lainey Gosnell drained a triple to give the Mountaineers a 92-91 edge with 2:39 left in the game. On the next possession, Terryn Milton was fouled and knocked down two free-throws to put the Lady Mavs on top 93-92 (1:54).

After App was able to retake the lead (94-93), thanks to a couple free throws, the Lady Mavericks employed a 6-0 run over the final 1:05 to secure the win.

The Lady Mavs return to College Park Center on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 12) when they host Coastal Carolina (8-6, 0-3 SBC) in SBC action. Tip-off for the contest, which will air on ESPN+, is set for 2 p.m.
